Stanislaus County finally moves into red tier

Stanislaus County was finally given the green light on Tuesday to move into the less restrictive red tier as part of the state’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy.

Stanislaus County’s daily case rate average was still higher than the metric for the red tier, but the continued low test positivity rate allowed for the move. The California Department of Public Health allows for a county to move down when the testing positivity rate meets the metrics of two tiers down, which in this case would be the orange tier.

Stanislaus County had an adjusted case rate of 12.2% per 100,000 residents and a testing positivity rate of 5% with an equity quartile positivity rate of 4.5%. The equity quartile positivity rate adjusts for efforts being made to stop the spread of COVID-19 in neighborhoods and regions that have been the hardest hit. Because both testing positivity rates have fallen at or below 5 percent, for a couple of weeks Stanislaus County could move into the red tier.

MODESTO, Calif. (KTXL) — While Stanislaus County’s infection rates have dropped significantly since the peak of the pandemic, they haven’t dropped low enough to meet the state’s criteria to move up to the red tier.

Stanislaus County at 13.6% per 100,000 people. The state mandates infection rate at 10% or lower.

The last time Stanislaus County was in the red tier was before the holidays and business owners say getting back there would be a big help.

Owner Larry Cary has been serving customers at his Modesto restaurant, The Brighter Side, for 45 years. He and other business owners are anxiously awaiting a return to the red tier.

“We’re doing maybe half to two-thirds business, is what we’re doing,” Cary said.

Cary says he wants to get back to doing business like before the pandemic.

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, Calif. — San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties could be in store for a long-overdue breath of relief as their COVID-19 stats continue to drop.

If all the trends go the right way, officials in both counties say they could be making the leap to California’s red coronavirus tier by the week of March 15. Both counties are currently in the purple “widespread” tiers, which is the most restrictive one.

The red tier would allow a number of businesses to partially reopen indoor with modifications, and, if the case rate metrics line up, children could also return to the classroom in Stanislaus County.

There’s only a couple of things standing in the way, the adjusted case rates and testing volume. In other words, the counties need a case rate of 7 per 100,000 or lower to move into the red tier, and, to get there, they say more people need to get tested.

Stanislaus County has been given the approval by the California Department of Public Health to move down one tier in the Blueprint for a Safer Economy, clearing the path for businesses to expand operations or in some instances reopen their doors.

Stanislaus County was able to move to the Red Tier because it met the two needed metrics and stayed there for two weeks. Under the Red Tier, daily new cases have to fall between four to seven per 100,000 residents and the positivity test rate has to be between five to eight percent. As of Tuesday, Stanislaus County has a case rate of 6.3 per 100,000 residents and a testing positive rate of 3.7%.
