Turlock nightlife strong after back-to-back deadly incidents. How safe do patrons feel?

Deadly violence earlier this month in downtown Turlock didn’t appear to cut much into the nightlife scene last weekend. And from person to person asked, it wasn’t top of mind, if on their mind at all.

“I totally forgot about the shootings,” Stephanie Smith, 57, said as she and her husband Dennis, 61, were leaving Memo’s Cocina & Tequila Bar on Friday night, Jan. 20. Smith’s 25-year-old son’s girlfriend was the one who told her about the recent violence in the area.

Turlock Police to increase patrols downtown following deadly weekend

TURLOCK, Calif. — Law enforcement officials in Stanislaus County are increasing patrols this weekend in downtown Turlock following a violent two days last weekend that left two people dead and one person injured in two separate downtown shootings.

In a Facebook post Friday, the Turlock Police Department said that they will be increasing patrols in the downtown corridor and surrounding areas Saturday and Sunday.

Is Modesto becoming more violent? Here’s what the 2022 homicide numbers show

When a homicide occurs in or around Modesto, a common refrain is that the city has become increasingly dangerous.

People blame politicians and public policy or transplants from the Bay Area and other large cities. Some lament that Modesto “never used to be like this,” while others who’ve moved away chime in to say what a great decision they made.

Two shootings, two stabbings — one fatal — as Stanislaus County rings in the new year

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day morning were marked with violence in Stanislaus County, including two shootings and two stabbings, one of which was fatal. The latter was Turlock’s second homicide of the holiday weekend and appears to be the first of 2023.

Little has been released about the homicide, which was on the 400 block of East Linwood Avenue.
